The Centre for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine at King’s College London offers Hans Rausing Scholarships to international students, whether they are from overseas, the European Union, or the United Kingdom, to support them financially in their studies.
Scholarship Information:

Award value:
The scholarship covers tuition fees, and a maintenance grant equivalent to that offered by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council for the duration of the program.
Eligibility criteria:
- The scholarship is available to students from overseas, the European Union or the United Kingdom (with no restrictions regarding nationality).
- Applicants must be applying to study the history of science and/or technology at Masters and PhD-level at the CHoSTM.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate an outstanding academic record and exceptional research potential in the history of science and/or technology.
Scholarships are available as:
- A one-plus-three-year award (“1+3 award”), which financially support the student to take one of the king college MA History programs, with progression to doctoral study at The Centre for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine subject to the satisfactory completion of the MA;
- A three-year award (“+3 award”), is given for students enrolled in Ph.D. program, and for students who already have a Master’s degree in the history of science, technology, and/or medicine (HSTM), or a Master’s degree in History or related humanity or social science field with an HSTM research experience or HSTM taught component.

Application procedure for +3 award:
- Applicants for the +3 award should apply for the History Research MPhil/Ph.D. via the KLG application portal.
- To be considered for the +3 award, applicants must submit with their online application a sample of written work, a brief personal statement of academic interests, reasons why they are undertaking doctoral research, and a 1,000-1,500 words research proposal. Students should also provide a bibliography, relevant historiography, and sources.
Application procedure for 1+3 award:
- Applicants should apply to one of the Masters of Art programs via the King’s College London online application portal.
- To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must submit with their online application a sample of written work and a personal statement of 1 to 2 pages of their academic interests, why they are undertaking postgraduate study in HSTM, and what are the possible fields of doctoral research.
- The applicant may also submit a research proposal of about 1,000 to 1,500 words plus bibliography and should outline the historical questions being addressed and their significance, relevant historiography, and sources, but this remains optional.
There is no separate application or form for the Rausing Scholarship.
